Your calling isn’t just tied to a job title—it’s about how you show up for your family, your community, and your faith, no matter where you are. – Conner Smith

After spending over a decade in pastoral ministry and nonprofit leadership, Conner Smith found himself at a crossroads. He had managed million-dollar church operations, overseen major renovations, led staff, and shepherded a congregation—his identity was deeply woven into ministry. But when financial pressures, shifting priorities, and family realities collided, Conner faced a difficult decision: Stay and fight for stability or step into something entirely new?

Leaving ministry wasn’t just a career move—it was an identity shift. Transitioning from being a lead pastor to an entry-level sales role forced Conner to redefine success, rethink his calling, and wrestle with what truly matters outside the church walls.

In this conversation, Conner and Evan explore:

✔ The tension of leaving ministry when it’s all you’ve ever known
✔ How pastoral skills translate into business and sales (even when others don’t see it at first)
✔ The challenge of leaving well without damaging relationships
✔ The struggle of identity loss and what it means to find purpose beyond a title
✔ The importance of making peace with uncertainty and taking the next right step

Letting Go Of Ministry Culture Without Losing Yourself

Pastoring wasn’t just a job—it was Conner’s life. He grew up in his church, met his wife there, and spent years leading the same people who watched him become a husband and father. Walking away wasn’t easy, but the moment came when he knew the best thing he could do for his family was to step into a different season.

I had promised myself that if I ever left, I would leave in the best way possible. No fights, no broken relationships—just an honorable transition.

Rather than forcing a raise or creating division, Conner chose to walk away with integrity, ensuring that relationships remained intact. But even with a smooth exit, grief followed.

💡 Leaving well means choosing peace over pride. It’s not about winning a battle—it’s about honoring the relationships that matter most.

Who Am I Without My Title?

For years, Conner saw himself as a pastor first. Faith, work, and community were intertwined. But when that was stripped away, he had to ask: Who am I now?

I went from being the head of an organization to making 100 cold calls a day. I had to wrestle with the reality that my skills and experience weren’t automatically valued in the business world.

At first, the shift felt like a demotion. But over time, he realized that the leadership, communication, and relational skills he developed in ministry weren’t lost—they just needed to be reframed.

💡 Your identity isn’t tied to a title. The skills and character you’ve built don’t disappear when your role changes. They evolve.

Redefining Calling Beyond the Church

Many pastors struggle with the idea that stepping away from vocational ministry means losing their calling. But Conner now sees calling differently.

For years, I thought calling was about my job. But I’ve come to see it differently. Calling isn’t about a specific role—it’s about how I show up for my family, my community, and my faith every day.

Instead of limiting purpose to a job title, Conner now prioritizes:
✔ Being a present husband and father
✔ Investing in relationships and community
✔ Pursuing excellence in his work, wherever that may be

💡 Sometimes, we overcomplicate calling. At its core, it’s about faithfulness—showing up, serving well, and trusting God in every season.

Leaving Space for the Unknown

Career transitions bring uncertainty, and it’s easy to feel stuck between where you’ve been and where you’re going.

When I stepped out of ministry, I had no idea what the future held. But I’ve learned that it’s okay to be in the in-between. It’s okay to move forward without knowing exactly where you’ll end up.

Rather than waiting for absolute clarity, Conner encourages others to:
✔ Take one step at a time—your next move doesn’t have to be your forever move
✔ Lean into self-awareness—understand your strengths and what energizes you
✔ Seek out mentors—learning from others can save you years of trial and error

💡 You don’t have to have everything figured out. Just take the next step—and trust that clarity will come in the process.
