Listen On:
If you’re not in a daily conversation and daily dependence on the Holy Spirit, you’re going to have a hard time discerning when to push through or when to pivot. – Tyler Reagin
Tyler Reagin is the author of The Life-Giving Leader, founder of Life-Giving Co., and a leadership coach with deep experience in helping leaders navigate transitions. From working with pastors through the 1010 Project to coaching high-level executives, Tyler has spent years shaping cultures and equipping leaders for healthy, impactful work.
But leadership isn’t just about strategy—it’s about creating safe spaces where people can be honest, navigate uncertainty, and grow without fear of burnout.
In this episode, Tyler and I dive into the challenges of discerning life transitions, the struggle leaders face with isolation, and how to cultivate rhythms of rest and connection that sustain leadership for the long haul.
The Power of Paying Attention: When God is Stirring, Get Curious
Most of us want clarity before we act. We wait for certainty, a clear roadmap, or a divine neon sign that tells us exactly what to do next. But Tyler says that often, it starts with something smaller: curiosity.
When I notice something stirring, I ask: What’s the next step I would take if I knew this was God?
For Tyler, this looked like a recent decision to move his family back to Atlanta—a move that wasn’t on his radar at all. But after observing subtle shifts in his wife and kids, he took time to sit with the uncertainty, journal, and pray. Instead of rushing the process, he leaned into curiosity and trusted that clarity would come step by step.
💡 If something is stirring in you, don’t rush past it. Get curious. Ask God what a small, faithful step would look like.
Discerning When to Push Through vs. When to Pivot
For high-capacity leaders, one of the hardest questions is: Do I keep going, or is it time for a change?
Tyler emphasizes that the only way to discern this well is through daily dependence on the Holy Spirit.
If you’re not in a rhythm of quiet, of actually slowing down enough to listen, you’re not going to know when it’s time to push through or when it’s time to shift.
He shares how taking moments of stillness—whether in prayer, journaling, or simply stepping back—helps clarify the difference between fear-driven resistance and a true signal that it’s time for something new.
💡Flourishing leaders don’t just hustle harder—they listen better. Sometimes the next right step is to stay. Other times, it’s to pivot. You won’t know unless you create space to hear.
Leadership Burnout and the Need for Safe Spaces
Many leaders are pacing toward exhaustion without even realizing it. And a big reason why? They don’t have safe spaces to process their struggles.
Pastors especially feel like they have no one to talk to. Their elders represent job security. Their staff looks up to them. Their congregants need them. So where do they go when they’re struggling?
Through his work with the 1010 Project, Tyler has seen firsthand how many leaders are isolated, carrying hidden burdens with no outlet to be vulnerable. The solution? Intentionally curated, psychologically safe spaces.
In 1010, leaders are placed in small groups where:
✔ No one needs anything from them.
✔ They have space to be real without fear of losing their job.
✔ They build long-term trust—meeting consistently for a year, not just a weekend retreat.
💡 If you don’t have a space where you can say the last 10% of what you’re struggling with, you’re not in a safe space. Find or create one.
Reframing Calling: Nothing is Beneath Your Purpose
Many people feel stuck because they’ve locked themselves into one definition of calling. Tyler challenges that mindset:
Your calling is bigger than a job title. It’s about bringing God glory and serving others—no matter what position you’re in.
Too often, leaders resist certain opportunities because they feel “beneath” their calling. But true leadership isn’t about chasing a perfect role—it’s about being faithful with whatever is in front of you.
💡 If you’re wrestling with calling, stop asking, ‘Is this the dream job?’ and start asking, ‘How can I serve well where I am?’
What Does Flourishing Look Like?
For Tyler, flourishing isn’t about career success—it’s about alignment.
✔ Deep dependence on God – A rhythm of listening, not just striving.
✔ Healthy relationships – Staying rooted in community and authentic friendships.
✔ Being fully present – Investing in family, not just work.
✔ Building something bigger than himself – Creating a legacy beyond his personal achievements.
💡 Flourishing isn’t about doing more. It’s about staying aligned—with God, with yourself, and with the people who matter most.
